WAN / LAN
Networks are often referred to in *AN acronyms. Here are a few of the most common.
- LAN – Local Area Network
- WLAN – Wireless Local Area Network
- WAN – Wide Area Network
- SAN – Storage Area Network (Sometimes: Server Area Network)
LAN usually refers to your local, physical business location. A building or office area normally. This network generally stops at the Firewall or other access point to the Internet or ISP provider and includes everything inside that network. (PC’s, Firewalls, Servers, Switches, Storage Devices etc)
WAN can be any large network of connected LANs. The Internet is a WAN for example. Most businesses and IT professionals are referring to multiple LANs controlled by a single company or managed by one source when they say WAN. If your company has 3 locations or buildings that are connected and communicate they would constitute a company WAN.
